Walburgis Church 13th-century collegiate church: a brief overview
The collegiate church dates from the 13th century and is regarded as one of the ten largest and most beautiful churches in the Netherlands. It was built on the remains of a Romanesque church from the 11th century. Parts of this earlier structure can still be seen above the present choir and in the walls of the transepts. There is a unique collection of beautifully restored vault, pillar and wall paintings. The church houses two libraries, including one of the last chain libraries in Europe. The famous Henrick Bader organ, with its beautiful Renaissance tones and later Baroque additions, is among the finest organs in the Netherlands. The magnificent chandelier – one of the six Jerusalem chandeliers still found in Europe – hangs in the choir.
