About the Walburgis Church

The Walburgis Church is the large church on ’s-Gravenhof in Zutphen. The oldest parts of the church date back to the 11th century. The church still contains many wall paintings. Until 1591, it was a collegiate church; after the Reformation, it became the main church of the Reformed congregation.

Treasures in the Walburgis Church

The Walburgis Church houses many treasures, including a chandelier from 1395, a brass baptismal font from 1527, the unique medieval chain library the Librije (1564), a sculpture of God the Father that served as a foundation for nearly 500 years, and the Henrick Bader organ from 1643. This organ is considered one of the top five in the Netherlands.

800 years of building history

In the 13th century, the church was rebuilt in Rhenish Romanesque-Gothic style. The choir and transepts were vaulted, and the nave was newly constructed. In the 14th century, the ambulatory around the choir and the council chapel were added. In the 15th century, the side aisles were built first, followed later by the transept chapels. Finally, the Marian portal was created on the north side. In the 16th century (1561), the Librije was added. From 1591 onwards, the Reformation was introduced and the church became Protestant. In 1637, the tower received its current Baroque spire. At the end of the 19th century, the church underwent a major restoration under the direction of the neo-Gothic architect P. J. H. Cuypers. After the Second World War, war damage was repaired. Following a tower fire in 1948, the Baroque spire was rebuilt. Between 1970 and 1998, the church was restored once again. In 2016, the Protestant Congregation of Zutphen transferred ownership of the church to the Oude Gelderse Kerken Foundation. To ensure a sustainable operation that would support the maintenance of the church, the Walburgis Church Zutphen Foundation was established.

The Largest Museum in the Netherlands

The Walburgis Church is part of the ‘Largest Museum in the Netherlands’: a collaboration between the Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht and the most beautiful places of worship in the country. They house remarkable objects in magnificent settings. Yet many people in the Netherlands pass them by without noticing, while on holiday it feels perfectly natural to visit impressive synagogues or cathedrals, centuries-old temple complexes or grand mosques.
Together, these places of worship form the ‘Largest Museum in the Netherlands’ and open their doors to the public. In this way, the hidden beauty of churches, synagogues, temples and mosques in the Netherlands is made accessible to everyone.
